Over the years our sense of smell has become very judgmental! We expect everyone to smell clean and fresh all the time, even if it means layering ourselves with all sorts of other odours and fragrances that conform to modern tastes and fashions. A typical morning routine is we get up, we wash, we roll or spray our deodorant under our arms and maybe spray our bodies with perfume as well! Everything we apply has fragrance all in the hope that we don't pong or smell bad. But is all this possibly doing us more harm that good?
Unfortunately a lot of the conventional deodorants contain aluminium, generally aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium zirconium. These ingredients are designed to form a temporary plug or an invisible film covering the sweat duct, preventing sweat from reaching the skin’s surface. Whilst this process has become widely accepted, it is potentially harmful, as sweat is the means by which we eliminate toxins from our body. If the sweat duct is blocked, then these toxins get trapped under our skin.
And this is where the problem lies. Our armpits contain lymph nodes, which act like little filters for our blood and form an essential part of our immune system. They fight germs and infections and help to keep us healthy. In order to function well, they need to be kept clear of toxins and heavy metals. And yet, by choosing to use antiperspirants, many of us are trapping these toxins in. Worse, since our lymph nodes act as a gateway, these toxins have direct access to our blood system and are selectively absorbed by the liver, kidney, brain, cartilage and bone marrow.
Most of us aren't comfortable putting harmful chemicals on our body to look and smell good, but it's difficult to find alternatives that work!
So what's a better solution in dealing with the dreaded pong???!!
Unlike anti-perspirants which use chemicals or metals to block the pores and stop you sweating, Free Range deodorant deals with the odour issue effectively, allowing your body to function naturally. Free Range deodorant is the genuine article. Truly natural, certified organic and made right here in New Zealand with beautiful ingredients and no tricky labelling. And it works!

How to use
Spread a half-pea sized dab under each arm. Use less rather than more - just a little is very effective. Typical usage is once-a-day application, which gives all-day protection. It should be re-applied after showers, swimming, or changing the layer of clothing against your skin.
Free Range deodorant comes in four formulas
'Sensitive' formula for sensitive skin and pregnant mums. Deliciously fresh, soothing, and naturally antibacterial, with a subtle scent that’s light and airy from the certified organic lavender essential oil.
'Active' the unisex formula for the active lifestyle. A refreshing blend of citrus and mint certified organic essential oils, loved by both men and women.
'ManPlus' formula - masculine strength when you need it. Combines tea tree, peppermint and cedarwood atlas for antibacterial action that will see you right, even if you smell like a bear!
‘Super Sensitive’ is for those who find deodorants (especially natural ones) cause skin irritation. With significantly less sodium bicarbonate and extra essential oils for odour control it is effective while being gentler on the underarm. It is scented with orange, tea tree and spearmint essential oils.
The Free Range basics:
The Free Range Company
When Amanda-Jane Healy went from being a Wellington lawyer to a rural Taranaki mum, she began looking for practical, truly natural solutions to everyday problems. One of those little everyday problems was body odour. Like most people she wasn't entirely comfortable with the ingredients in the deodorant and antiperspirant products she was buying, but she couldn't find a natural one that worked well. After much research and many 'willing human' trials she had something that really worked. Last year she started the Free Range Company, selling the Free Range deodorants.
Some questions answered...
Can I use use it while pregnant? Yes. The Sensitive and Super Sensitive formulas are recommended for pregnant mums. The Active and ManPlus formulas contain peppermint essential oil, which is not recommended during pregnancy.
Does it stop me sweating? No - you have to block your pores to stop sweating, which is what chemical antiperspirants do. Free Range deodorant does absorb some moisture, but its main purpose is to deal with the body odour issue effectively, allowing your body to function naturally.n.
How long does it last? because Free Range deodorant is 100% pure ingredients with no fillers, it is extremely effective and very little is required. With typical once-a-day usage, the Deluxe size lasts around 4 months ($2.10 per week) and the Mini up to 10 days.
I've loved using this beautiful New Zealand produced certified organic deodorant. The essential oil fragrances smell divine with little amount going a long way keeping the dreaded pong at bay. But most importantly I know I'm not putting anything harmful on my skin which will end up in my body. Try some you'll love it!!!
