What is Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) it's a New Zealand native herb used traditionally for many different ailments including healing properties for sensitive, irritated skin. It works by relieving the itch and creating a barrier over the skin, locking in moisture and supporting the active repair of the skin.
Michele from Frankie Apothecary, a mother of a child who suffered aggressive Eczema discovered the healing abilities of this native Kawakawa and developed her own beautiful organic healing balm the Kawakawa Balm.
Frankie Apothecary Kawakawa Balm is chemical-free, organic and suitable for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin.
It's 100% plant / oil based using wildcrafted traditional Rongoa (Maori plant medicine) techniques and made from a mix of certified organic ingredients and wild crafted ingredients. It contains a high concentration of nourishing Shea butter, Organic Coconut and Olive oil, healing Calendula, Vitamin E and Kawakawa to create a highly effective balm.
The Frankie Apothecary Kawakawa Balm and Sunscreen are packed with Kawakawa extract and oil, which is foraged by hand, this is thought to increase the plants medicinal qualities (as well as its sustainability). Michele was making her Kawakawa batches in small quantities by hand however as the market awareness and demand has increased its now being manufactured (except for the kawakawa component which she still makes herself.
Frankie Apothecary Kawakawa Balm is made from Organic Beeswax, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Coconut Oil, Kawakawa Extract, Kawakawa Infused Oil, Calendula Extract, Kawakawa Extract and Vitamin E.
Apply Kawakawa Balm 2-3 times a day to irritated skin and then daily as skin begins to heal.

I was showcasing Kawakawa Balm last weekend at a market when a woman exclaimed wow it smells so good, good enough to eat!!
Well as it turns out you can eat Kawakawa!!
Today I walked into our local Wild Wheat shop looking for some nice artisan bread for our Wedding Anniversary lunch and discovered this Olive & Kawakawa Focaccia loaf!
It was delicious!! Its a great summer loaf studded with juicy Kalamata olives and literally peppered with kawakawa which they've use as a culinary spice. It's perfect for yummy summer sandwiches stuffed full of fresh goodies and would be great sliced up as part of a antipasto platter with hummus & dunking in olive oil! Or go very kiwi with a wee spread of butter!!
Wild Wheat are selling this Olive & Kawakawa round loaf as part of their special loaf of the month for $6.00
I can't wait to see what the newly monthly special is!!
Wild Wheat supplies mainly to cafes and restaurants around Auckland but also has three great retail shops in Mt Eden, Belmont and Howick.
Have you ever tried Kawakawa?
